newspaper called The Spotlight, from its January 3 & 10, 1983 issue. The newspaper's tagline is "The Paper You Can Trust." The lead editorial is titled "Taxation Representation," and discusses a gasoline tax bill. A photo on the page shows Senator Barry Goldwater of Arizona.
The article "Few Senators..." discusses how a small number of senators, including Jesse Helms and John East, opposed the Gasoline Tax Bill. The article notes that the legislation would increase the federal tax on gasoline from four cents a gallon, but does not provide the new rate. A Washington Post article from late December 1982, about the same bill, states that the Senate passed the gasoline tax increase by a vote of 54 to 33, and that President Reagan was expected to sign it into law. The bill increased the federal tax on gasoline by five cents.
Senator Barry Goldwater
Political Career: Goldwater, a conservative Republican from Arizona, served in the U.S. Senate from 1953-1964 and again from 1969-1987.
