The F-4C Phantom II, tail number 63-7499, was one of the aircraft flown by Colonel Daniel "Chappie" James Jr. during his service with the 433rd Tactical Squadron, 8th Tactical Wing, in the Vietnam . James, who later became the first African American four-star general in the U.S. Air Force, played a key role in air operations over Southeast Asia. In 1967, he flew numerous combat missions from Ubon Royal Thai Air Force Base, engaging in both air superiority and ground missions.
